Many parents are ditching disposable diapers and go with cloth ones. Some people do this because of the environmental aspect. They just don’t like the idea of using something just once and then throwing it away, where it will eventually end up in a landfill. One of the great things about cloth diapers is that they are designed to be reused. Parents don’t need to worry about their diaper practices contributing to every increasingly sized garbage dumps. When it comes to cloth diapers, more parents are also finding out just how helpful wool cloth diapers, in particular, can be.
Some people are put off from cloth diapers because they’re worried about how liquids might spill out and cause a mess. One option to prevent this from happening has been the use of cloth diapers with a plastic laminated surface. This plastic coating is what creates a waterproof layer on the outside of the cloth diaper. Unfortunately, this tends to detract from the goal of using diapers in a way, which is more in harmony with the environment. Wool cloth diapers offer an excellent alternative to the plastic coated products. The wool creates a similarly waterproof barrier but in a way that is more natural.
This useful quality of wool stems from the fact that when that wool was still being worn by a sheep, it had the job of keeping the animal healthy. This meant that it needed to act as protection from the elements, including rain and snow. Wool was up to this task because of its ability to repel moisture, and this same characteristic will help to keep babies’ diapers more comfortable and hygienic. Wool cloth diapers will mean that any urine that may happen to soak the diaper will not make it past the wool.
There are other benefits to these kinds of diapers as well. One interesting aspect of wool cloth diapers is that they can end up looking more like baby clothing, as opposed to just plain old diapers. This usually involves a combination of a cloth diaper on the inside and a wool layer on the outside. Used in this way, the wool cover might end up looking like a cute pair of pants, a skirt or shorts. This means that your child won’t have to put on yet another layer of clothing over the diaper. This helps when it comes to better comfort, less complex changing routines, and lighter clothing.
One thing to keep in mind when it comes to wool cloth diapers is that the wool works hand in hand with the substance, lanolin. Over time and depending on the amount of use, the lanolin in the diaper will fade away and will need to be replenished. The upside though is that wool diapers can be used repeatedly, requiring fewer washing over time.
